![]() ![]() Presidents placed their hand on the Bible when being sworn in, including George Washington, but some presidents, like Theodore Roosevelt didn’t use the Bible. The right hand typically represents authority, so this might be why the right hand is raised. Traditionally, presidents who were sworn into office would raise their right hand and place their left hand on the Bible. Jesus tells us to “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ anything more than this comes from evil” (Matt 5:37). And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black” (Matt 5:34-36), so we don’t really need to swear when we say we are going to do something or make a promise. Jesus said, “Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. James wrote “do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation” (James 5:12). In Article II, Section One, and in Clause 8 of the United States Constitution, the elected president must take an oath before they begin the office of the presidency but it doesn’t dictate that a Bible be used during the oath, it’s just that it’s been tradition because of the Christian faith of most of the U.S. President placed his hand on the Bible when taking the oath of office?
